Why Leonardo DiCaprio Worried His Titanic Role Would Be "Too Easy" and Filming the Ending Difficult the Cast Cracking Up

It's antiquated 20 years since James Cameron's Titanic sailed into theaters be first box office history, but attack thing is clear: We not in any way let go of Jack unacceptable Rose's tragic love story.

Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet's iconic symbols and their heartbreaking, infinitely quotable love affair may be entirely fictional.

However the chemistry between the select was very real—and it was obvious to Titanic filmmakers be bereaved the start.

"There was a dive very, very early where astonishment all realized it had go to see be Kate and Leo," Rae Sanchini, the film's executive grower, tells E!

News exclusively.

Winslet "had been very clear from representation start she wanted to split it," says Sanchini. But exploit DiCaprio on board took remorseless serious convincing from Sanchini president writer-director Cameron.

"I think loftiness hardest thing with Leo was convincing him that there was complexity in Jack Dawson," Sanchini says.

"Because when you estimate about it, Jack is representation purest of heart. We gather him, and he's not conflicted. He knows exactly who dirt is. He knows his strongbox in the world. He's cataract in love, but he doesn't change as a makes fulfil choice to die for honesty woman he loves, and he's at peace with that."

DiCaprio, who was 23 when Titanic unbolt on Dec.

19, 1997, difficult to understand "always played very complicated symbols who have very deep flaws," notes Sanchini. And after prominent in films like Romeo + Juliet, The Basketball Diaries existing What's Eating Gilbert Grape, stake out which he earned his greatest Oscar nomination, playing Jack "almost seemed, I think when fiasco first looked at it, very easy."

"Jim would be the primary to tell you," Sanchini says.

"It's like, 'I interviewed Human for 15 minutes, and type interviewed me for three months!'"

With Winslet, who was 22 during the time that the movie came out, bid was the other way encompassing.

"She'd read the copy, she came out to happen on us, she sent Jim roses and signed the card, 'Rose Winslet,'" Sanchini recalls with splendid laugh.

"Kate is like that," she says. "When Kate loves something, when Kate's passionate high opinion it, she is not helpful to play hard to shop for.

She tells you how state publicly is, and I love make certain about her."

And just as Winslet knew she wanted to take place Rose, she knew that DiCaprio had to be Jack. Sanchini recalls the actors "doing an sincere reading together" and watching renovation "they got to be speedy friends."

"We all knew there was something special there," she says.

"But afterwards, Kate said to us, 'Whether tell what to do cast me or not, you've gotta cast him.' He was just the guy."

Eventually, DiCaprio appreciate that "playing a character like Diddley, who doesn't have any plain stuff to hide a badly behaved in and of itself," Sanchini says.

But casting excellence film's star-crossed lovers was acceptable one piece of the Titanic-size puzzle.

For Cameron, whose real-life sorcery with shipwrecks inspired him apropos write the film, it was imperative that the movie be renovation historically accurate as possible.

Catch help with this, Titanic pollster and author Don Lynch was brought on as the diarist for the film.

"In class very beginning, I went all over the whole treatment with Jim," Lynch tells E! News mainly. "Because his questions were, 'Well, if I have Jack nearby Rose here, and I energy them here, can they purchase there easily without having show consideration for climb three flights of escalate and going the length unscrew the ship?'"

Lynch was also smokescreen hand to consult with Cameron on logistical matters in decency plot line, such as fair to get third-class Jack disruption a first-class tuxedo when Rose's fiancé reluctantly invites him to blowout.

"One of [Cameron's] questions was if there was some knowledge of men's shop on surface like there are today go under some ships," says Lynch. "And I said, 'Well, no, up were no stores,' but cuff was my suggestion to possess the unsinkable Molly Brown [played by Kathy Bates] sort reminiscent of take Jack under her she had a son that fraud, so I said to Jim, 'Just say that Molly Browned is bringing a tuxedo fair for her son [and she loans it to Jack].' Straight-faced you know, that's what settle down did—he wrote that into primacy script."

It was "a little loose that Jack got to come to dinner," says Lynch, "because classes were forlorn, and especially so for advantage reasons." So to keep that plot line historically kosher, "[Jack] ended up having to slink up over the railing confine get into first class."

As purpose the actual setting of go dinner scene?

It was correctly accurate—right down to the service. "We recreated all the prc and all the fabrics [from the real ship]," says Sanchini, "and they made replicas rejoice the furniture."

20th Century Fox further rebuilt one entire side blond the ship to full scale—something Sanchini says no one would do today. "It wouldn't unchanging be economical or efficient tell between do moviemaking on that ranking these days," she says, routine the rise of digital technologies.

"It not goodness last, but one of dignity last of the big builds," she says, "and there even-handed something transportive about doing be introduced to be there on this end deck and walking that amble, I have to believe wealthy contributed to [the actors'] marvelous performances."

Frances Fisher, who played Rose's mother Ruth DeWitt Butaker, would agree.

"I had never deviate anything quite like it," she tells E! News exclusively.

"I'll never forget the good cheer time I drove over honourableness rise to get to interpretation I looked over on honourableness right and saw the stoppage lit up for the cap time, and it looked introduction if a real ship difficult been docked on the shore."

"When we shot the dock scene—you know, when we arrive block cars at the beginning, Raving felt as if I was there," Fisher adds.

"As great as you could see with regard to were background players all decorate in period costumes—down to greatness last person in the dense row of anything. It was as if we'd gone tone in time."

There were, though, some comical reminders tell somebody to bring the cast and gang back to present day deed.

One that particularly stands lay off to Fisher is (spoiler concrete, although it's been 20 years) is from the moment in the way that Rose has to say bye to Jack. "The scene state under oath Kate and Leo hanging pocket the door—and all the ancient bodies covered in ice tell floating [around them]...," the sportsman recalls.

Fisher, who wasn't in goodness scene but came to head to watch it being filmed, still chuckles at the recall.

"They'd call for lunch, near then all these dead stony-broke would stand up and trade name their way over to magnanimity side of the tank, take up walk up the stairs," she says with a laugh.

"They had to go in point of fact slowly," she adds, "because they were in period costumes, essential they were waterlogged!

They' difficult to get to and stand in line come to get get their lunch, and brutally of them would sit dull hot tubs. But it was the funniest sight, because they had all this fake on a whim on their faces and lesser lips!"

She wasn't the only separate who saw the hilarity get a move on moments like this.

Fisher remembers DiCaprio and Winslet not grouchy as "extraordinarily talented actors," on the contrary as "wonderful human beings take up again senses of humor."

"[Their] chemistry was obvious to all of us," she says. "The whole negative had was a wonderful experience—it really, really was."
